This map is a visualization of the performance of 70 countries in implementing open data programmes. Although many governments across the globe have committed to make their data public, performance is lagging behind expectations.
Kenya implemented the Open Data Initiative in 2011. Since then, however, the country has only managed to make public 436 data sets on its web-based open data portal. Much of this data is also at least three years old.
According to government officials steering the project, there are challenges in getting ministries that have traditionally been closed to open up and release information. The Ministry of Information and Communication is now authoring a cabinet memo that would force all government ministries and agencies to co-operate with the Open Data Initiative.
This visualisation relies on data collected by the Open Knowledge Foundation and published in the Open Data Index 2013. For more information and data, go to https://index.okfn.org/
