It is being said that India will overtake US and is poised to become the second largest Internet user market in the world. Currently, China tops the table with more than 600 million users. US is placed at second with 279 million users followed closely by India with 240 million users.
Experts have predicted that given the strong growth rate, India will overtake US by end of this year. The number of Internet users in India is increasing at a rate of 14 percent. The growth rate in China and US are 4 percent and 7 percent respectively.
Of the top five countries in terms of Internet Users including Japan and Brazil, India added approximately 30 millions in the year 2014. China added 24 million followed by US with 14 million.
According to a report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International, the number of people online in India is forecast to touch 302 million by the end of this year. The strong growth in Internet consumption on mobile devices is going to play a major factor here.
The Internet in India took more than a decade to move from 10 million to 100 million and 3 years from 100 million to 200 million.
"However, it took only a year to move from 200 to 300 million users. Clearly, Internet is mainstream in India today," IAMAI-IMRB said in a statement.
The report also added that the number mobile of Internet users in rural India are likely to grow to 53 million by June 2015, while the urban India will continue to account for the larger percentage with 160 million users.
