This map shows World Neonatal mortality rate. Neonatal mortality rate defined as number of deaths during the first 28 completed days of life per 1000 live births in a given year or other period.
Current world Neonatal mortality rate: 16.19 deaths per 1000 live births (2009)
Neonatal mortality accounts for a large proportion of child deaths in many countries, especially in low-income settings. Mortality during neonatal period is considered a good indicator of both maternal and newborn health and care.
Note: The neonatal period commences at birth and ends 28 completed days after birth; Live birth refers to the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of the pregnancy, which, after such separation, breathes or shows any other evidence of life (e.g. beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord or definite movement of voluntary muscles) whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached. Each product of such a birth is considered live born.
