Update for 2011
What is Human Development Index?
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, and standard of living for countries worldwide. The HDI sets a minimum and a maximum for each dimension, called goalposts, and then shows where each country stands in relation to these goalposts, expressed as a value between 0 and 1, where greater is better.
How is Human Development Index calculated?
The Human Development Index (HDI) measures the average achievements in a country in three basic dimensions of human development:
- Health is measured by life expectancy at birth.
- Knowledge is measured by a combination of the adult literacy rate and the combined primary, secondary, and tertiary gross enrolment ratio.
- Standard of living by GDP per capita (PPP US$).
The HDI is the geometric mean of normalized indices measuring achievements in each dimension.
