• Total area under opium poppy cultivation in the major cultivating countries: 181,373 hectares (ha)
• Potential opium production: 7,754 metric tons
• Potential HEROIN: ~657,000 kilograms (kg)

In 2009, the area under opium poppy cultivation decreased by 15% from 2008. Similar to the year before, this was mainly due to a large decrease in opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan, which was not offset by increases in Myanmar and the Lao People's DemocraticRepublic.
